Overview

Mistral AI provides models for tasks including language, multimodal processing, coding and speech. Its official catalog includes open-weight and commercial offerings.[1] The company, a specific model and a hosted service are different subjects.

Weights and licenses

Downloadable weights do not imply unrestricted use for every purpose. The catalog lists different licenses for different models.[1] Inspect the selected model's weights, code and usage terms rather than applying one licensing claim to the whole company.

Read model identifiers

Check inputs, outputs and task scope, then the identifier, version, availability and support status. Current inference documentation is a starting point for service interfaces.[2] A model name in an old example does not establish current availability.

Worked example: extracting document fields

This case is hypothetical. Compare two models on the same Korean documents and prompts. Measure dates, organization names and amounts separately, along with supporting passages, formatting errors and latency. Count invented fields when the source contains no answer. A single average can hide important amount errors or failures on one document format.

Hosting and self-operation

Self-operation requires memory planning, batching, updates and incident handling. Hosted services introduce processing terms, request limits, prices and version changes. Compare complete costs at similar quality and workload levels. Record identifiers, data versions, prompts, generation settings and execution environments. Inference, Model Card and Sovereign AI provide related operational and evaluation context.

Separate the model, weights and API

Mistral's model catalog ↗ identifies tasks, delivery options and model-specific licenses.[1] Record the identifier, version, weights, tokenizer and whether hosted inference is used. Two models from one company need not share modalities or terms.
Inference documentation ↗ is a starting point for interfaces.[2] Compare identifiers in old examples with the current catalog. Open weights, unrestricted commercial use and published source code are separate claims. Inspect actual license conditions; the examples here do not grant usage rights.

Worked example: a weight-memory lower bound

This is not a Mistral model specification. A hypothetical four-billion-parameter model stored at two bytes per parameter requires eight billion bytes for weights, approximately 7.45 GiB. At 0.5 bytes per parameter, simple arithmetic gives two billion bytes. That excludes quantization metadata, KV cache, activations and runtime overhead. A device with slightly more memory is not therefore guaranteed to run the workload.
Quantization changes representation and operating requirements; task quality must be reevaluated. Fitting weights and serving concurrent requests at the target latency are different problems. Compare the accelerator environment and inference system together.

Evaluate extraction by field

Twenty hypothetical documents with a date, organization and amount produce 60 evaluated fields. Getting 57 correct gives 95%, but three important amount errors may still make the system unsuitable. Report field-specific errors, document-format failures and invented fields for missing source information. These are illustrative numbers, not product performance.
Use the same sources, prompts and answer criteria across models. Valid JSON and correct field values are separate checks. Reevaluate when sources, tokenizers or model versions change, including unsupported values.

Record operating conditions

For self-operation, record hardware, engine, batches, data preparation and updates. For hosting, record identifiers, request conditions, processing terms and failure handling. Evaluation scope and operational control make the choice more precise than a brand comparison. Compare total cost per task completed at the required quality, not only the cheapest individual call.
