The term foundation model was introduced to describe models trained on broad data at scale and then adapted to many downstream uses.[1] It is a functional category rather than the name of one architecture.

How it works

A foundation model can serve as a reusable base for specialized systems through prompting, fine-tuning, retrieval, or additional components. Because many downstream products may depend on one model, capabilities and failures can propagate across applications.

Why it matters

The concept is useful for analyzing both leverage and systemic risk. A single base model can accelerate many applications, while bias, security weaknesses, or reliability problems may also affect many dependent systems.
